With the house finally built Tommy Walsh has time to reflect on the past events. It was undoubtedly one of the toughest challenges he has ever had to face as a television presenter or a builder.
We chose the summer of 2007 to shoot the series which turned out to be the worst summer for 50 years! Delays because of bad weather, late delivery of building materials and other factors all added to the pressure that is commonplace in TV production.
Despite that producing the series was great fun. There were lots of funny moments especially involving Tony and Will. We hope that it inspired viewers to consider the possibilities of a self build or at least think about how they can make their existing property more eco friendly.
We hope the series demonstrates what can be achieved for a relatively small amount of money and that embarking on a self build enables you to design something that is specific, individual and suits your needs. If you embrace certain eco elements in your build you can save a considerable amount of money in household bills and contribute significantly to the welfare environment.
Early tests have shown that the running costs of the house will be approximately £250 per year!
It was quite a journey for Tommy, his build team and all of the production staff at Free Spirit.
The 10 part series was produced and delivered to Discovery TV on time and on budget and we are all immensely proud of what we have achieved. We hope it inspires and entertains viewers for many years to come.
